"I was very skeptical of any sport psychologist coming to talk to high school athletes. In fact, I really thought it was a waste of money because skill development was more important and that would take away some of our court time. However, Winning Actions made Ben Franklin Volleyball better because positive thoughts actually improved our skills. Furthermore, team members were able to share their feelings about what scared them in competition and helped transfer that fear into confidence. We went from self-doubt and being scared to a confident

team. Every year Dr. Melito takes what I feel are our weaknesses and focuses on that while talking to the team."

"For our team the mentality we have going into a game matters so much more than our raw talent. When our thoughts are concentrated on fighting for every point to win there is no stopping us. Through winning actions we were able to hone in our mental toughness which helped us perform better and play with more confidence and feistiness."

"Just one session with Dr. Melito has improved my mental game and also my physical abilities. Being that it is my first year as a varsity volleyball player, I was rather nervous in stepping out on the court every game. Dr. Melito helped me quiet those nerves by teaching me to block out all of the distractions and focus on what I could control, such as my breathing and my positive mental attitude. Being able to control my breathing, or have a centering breath as Dr. Melito would say, helps me refocus on the game and be more aware of my actions. Maintaining a positive mental attitude throughout the game is also an important factor Dr. Melito taught me to improve my performance as an athlete. It’s key to build myself up instead of breaking myself down; if I tell myself I can’t do something; I won’t do it. That something could be that last ace I need to win the state championship, but if my mind tells me I can’t do it, I won’t. That is something Dr. Melito has taught me to avoid and has in fact improved my physical abilities greatly."

"My first session with Dr. Melito last year, as a freshman, gave me an insight into what mental challenges I would encounter as an athlete, but I did not fully understand the importance of his advice until I stepped on the court as a sophomore starter. Being a starter made me anxious and fearful of failing my teammates which increased every time I made an error. After hearing him speak I have gained confidence in my abilities and those of my teammates. Dr. Melito taught me to shake off an error and not focus on the previous but focus on the present. He taught me new ways to improve my mental abilities by taking centering breaths, focusing on the now, locking the mistake in and letting it go, and always keeping a positive mindset."

"Dr. Melito helped our team realize that success in volleyball depends as much on mental strength as physical capabilities. His advice on staying focused, relaxed, and confident transformed our mindsets on the court, and his visualization exercises helped us prepare for games. The resources our team received from Dr. Melito taught us how to build confidence in both ourselves and our teammates. After his session, I was able to maintain a positive outlook and a stable emotional state even in tough situations, which made me a more consistent player."
